Illustrations folder from the Kingdom of Galicia

The initiative seeks to disseminate the history of the medieval kingdom of Galicia by creating accessible and attractive informative material to the general public.

The project was structured in six different phases, guaranteeing a rigorous process of research, creation and dissemination:

Phase 1 - Historical Research

A selection of 10 key historical moments, characters and relevant places of the Kingdom of Galicia, with special emphasis on recovering forgotten or little -known stories was made.

Phase 2 - Creation Two texts

From the documentation collected, 10 short texts were drafted with a clear and informative tone. A common introductory text for all sheets was also developed, contextualizing the project.

Phase 3 - Artistic creation

The graphic interpretation of these historical episodes was in the hands of five Galician illustrators with creative freedom to develop their proposals:

    • Iria Fafián: Dona Urraca and María Castaña.
    • Laura Romero: Lupa Pérez de Traba and Inés de Castro.
    • María Montes: Maior Guntroda Rodríguez e Aldonça I & Sancha II.
    • Minia Regos: Ildura Eriz and Sancha I.
    • Nuria Díaz: Tareixa de León and María Peres, A Balteira.

Each one approached their own vision and style, visually enriching the project.

Phase 4 - Layout and Printing

Once the illustrations and the texts were created, the final layout was made for its final format: A4 blades A4 color on Semimate paper of 250 g, with illustration on the obverse and explanatory text on the reverse.

Phase 5 - Disclosure and Promotion

The dissemination of the project was based on three main channels:

    • Printed and Digital Press - Us Diario → Centation of spaces in the newspaper to disseminate the initiative, give visibility to the illustrators and promote the medieval Galician history.
    • Social Networks - Maos Social Innovation → Instagram, Facebook and Twitter publications to promote the project, illustrators and the creative process.
    • The illustrations folder itself → as an accessible and attractive historical dissemination tool.

In addition, specific contents were created, such as interviews with illustrators and articles on the Galician Medieval, reinforcing the impact of the project.

Phase 6 - Distribution

The distribution was made thanks to the collaboration with Us Diario, which included in his newspaper a collectable card (September 17, 2021). To obtain the folder, readers had to cut 5 coupons published between September 20 and 24 and deliver them to the kiosk in exchange for a symbolic payment of € 2 in management and distribution costs.

The project went to the general public, with a format designed to escape the academic approaches and to be accessible to all audiences. In addition, it is a useful tool for associations, foundations and cultural entities, which can use it in exhibitions or conferences on medieval Galician history.
