John in the Wilderness

Based on archaeological research, historical documentation and heritage dissemination, John in the Wilderness focused on the location and enhancement of the disappeared monastery of San Xoán da Cova, located in the parish of Ponte Ulla (Vedra).

The project combined research work, archaeological intervention and dissemination actions with the aim of recovering knowledge about an enclave of great relevance for the medieval history of Galicia.

The initiative made it possible to deepen the study of a monastery documented from the 9th and 10th centuries, linked to prominent figures of the Kingdom of Galicia, the Viking invasions and the religious and territorial organization of the medieval period. Through prospecting work, location of archaeological evidence and selective excavations, new data were obtained that contribute to the delimitation and interpretation of this historical space, until now considered a heritage reference of imprecise location.

Xunto á investigación científica, o proxecto desenvolveu unha importante vertente divulgativa. Activities open to the public, guided tours and communication actions were organized to bring the results to the local community and the public interested in medieval heritage. In addition, specific materials were prepared to facilitate the understanding and dissemination of the contents, including an interpretive script, an informative leaflet and a didactic unit intended for primary education students.

The proposal thus contributed to the recovery of the historical memory of San Xoán da Cova, strengthening the connection between archaeological research, education and cultural development.

The result is a project that not only provides new knowledge about the Galician medieval past, but also promotes the conservation, valorization and socialization of a heritage closely linked to the identity of the territory.
