Maria Balteira. Reflexes of the genre

Audiovisual piece with didactic content that explores the representation of women in medieval Galician-Portuguese lyrics, with special attention to songs of mockery and cursing. Through a critical and feminist perspective, the project proposes a pedagogical review of the troubadour tradition, focusing its narrative on the historical figure of the welder María Balteira.

The short film is structured around four interconnected narrative lines:

  • A group of students reflects in class on different medieval songs, promoting a critical analysis of the contents and the context in which they were created.
  • Through a drag performance, two characters are transformed into troubadours who represent a hypermasculinized expression, as a critique of the gender stereotypes reflected in the lyrics of the time.
  • María Balteira's story is told through a contemporary poetic and musical composition, which connects her figure with the present.
  • The narrative is accompanied by images of female iconography present in the traditional art and architecture of rural A Coruña, visually reinforcing the proposal.

The ultimate intention of this project is to bring medieval Galician literature to students from a current and transformative perspective, which encourages critical thinking and gender equality. The piece combines contemporary didactic and aesthetic resources - such as electronic music, drag art or audiovisual narrative - with the aim of making the medieval cultural legacy accessible in a creative, respectful and inclusive way.
