Martiño de Dumio: popular spirituality in the Kingdom of Galicia

Through the figure of Martiño de Dumio, one of the most influential personalities of the Suevian Galicia of the 6th century, this project explores the beliefs, rites and spiritual practices that were part of the daily life of the population of the Kingdom of Galicia.

The proposal was born with the intention of transferring valuable historical and anthropological knowledge to the general public, using current and accessible formats that allow connecting the past with the present.

The central axis of the project is the analysis of De Correctione Rusticorum, a sermon in which Martiño de Dumio condemned numerous practices considered pagan. Paradoxically, this text has become an exceptional source for learning about aspects of Galician popular spirituality, documenting traditions linked to millstones, fountains, herbs, omens, mythical figures or rites associated with the annual calendar.

Many of these cultural manifestations have reached the present day, becoming a direct bridge between medieval and contemporary Galicia.

To disseminate this content, an audiovisual series was produced recorded in different heritage spaces in the province of A Coruña, complemented by a conversation in podcast format, graphic materials for social networks and face-to-face activities of a divulgative nature.

The project exceeded the initial objectives, expanding the number of audiovisual pieces planned and strengthening accessibility through subtitling and the creation of complementary resources.

The initiative also developed an important educational aspect, taking the contents to educational centers and cultural spaces with the purpose of encouraging interest in medieval Galician history and the intangible heritage of the country. In this way, the project contributes to enhancing the Kingdom of Galicia from an innovative perspective, linking historical research, cultural dissemination and collective memory.
