The Kingdom on the Map

Project of historical dissemination that seeks to represent the medieval history of Galicia through the cartography. Its aim is to offer contextualized maps with explanatory content in various formats to facilitate their use in teaching and dissemination.

The project began with a research and consultation phase with a specialist committee to select the eight most relevant maps among 22 initial proposals.

Once chosen, the Tysgal team has transformed the databases into digital maps using GIS programs. Then, designer Pedro Iglesias gave the project with a coherent graphic unit, both on the maps and on the website.

At the same time, a communication strategy for the web and social networks has been designed, ensuring a wide and accessible diffusion. There were also explanatory videos with experts such as José Carlos Sánchez Pardo, José Miguel Andrade Cernadas or Diana Pelaz Flores, and a selection of medieval mapping has been made that demonstrate the presence of Galicia in the sources of the time.

The end result is available in reino.gal under CC-BY-SA license of Creative Commons, allowing content reuse and adaptation.

Thus, this project aims to be a useful tool for teachers, researchers and the general public, contributing to the creation of content in Galician on the history of the Kingdom of Galicia.
