Tiktoker nail in the kingdom of Galicia

It aimed to bring the medieval history of Galicia to the youth through short videos on the Tiktok social network.

Betting on an informative, dynamic and humorous tone, this initiative proposes to recover key episodes of the history of the Kingdom of Galicia and present historical characters, places and concepts in an entertaining, rigorous and adapted to the current digital language.

The series consists of 25 short videos, made entirely in Galician, with subtitles in the same language to ensure accessibility. The contents cover various topics such as the coronation of Alfonso VII, the troubadourism, the sister revolts, the Galician Romanesque, or figures like Urraca, Alfonso the Sabio, Sancha and Dulce or Pardo de Cela.

In addition, issues such as gender-based violence or affective-sexual diversity in the medieval Galician context are addressed.

The project also promotes interaction with the public through challenges, questions and comments, thus encouraging a community around the interest in Galician history. The language used is inclusive, cared for and validated by a linguist, and all videos start from contrasting historical sources, with advice from historian Carlos Callón and bibliographic base in authors such as Anselmo López Carreira, Xosé Miguel Andrade Cernadas, Xosé Ramón Pena or Francisco Rodríguez.

The initial planning had to adapt to the grant concession times, but the execution was completed as expected, with the videos released between January and March 2024. To adapt to the Tiktok algorithm, some videos were grouped into pieces over one minute, thus optimizing their visibility.

The reception has exceeded expectations: more than 361,000 unique views in Tiktok and Instagram at the time of the report, and with a growing trend that predicts over half a million.

A TIKTOKER in the Kingdom of Galicia demonstrates the potential of social networks as a tool of cultural and historical transmission, bringing quality content to the Galician youth and strengthening the pride for their identity and past.
